National Program FAQs

Q. Which schools are eligible to apply for grants under the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program?
A. All Australian government schools with primary enrolments. At this stage there are no grants for independent schools or government secondary schools; however, we encourage these schools to make use of resources on our website.

Q. How many grants will be available in each state each year?
A. We are waiting for the Australian Government to release that information and we will make it available on our website as soon as possible.

Q. When are grants open?
A. The first round of grants open on Monday 13 October and close on Friday 7 November.

Q. My school already has a garden or kitchen. Does this make us ineligible for a grant?
A. No. We welcome your existing commitment. You can still apply for the grants as long as the funding will be used to expand your garden or kitchen facilities.

Q. Will we be able to use the grant to supplement my specialist staffing?
A. No. The grant is only able to be used for kitchen and garden infrastructure. Schools need to find funds for staffing for their operational budgets or other sources.

Q. My school was unsuccessful for a ‘Go For Your Life’ grant in Victoria. Can we still apply for a grant under the National Pilot Program?
A. Yes. These grants are also open to Victorian primary schools, including those who have previously applied for (but not received) ‘Go For Your Life’ funding. However, schools which have received ‘Go For Your Life’ funding are not eligible for these grants.

Q. My school has received a different grant to assist with our garden or kitchen in the past. Does this make us ineligible?
A. No. As long as it was not an Australian Government School and Community grant allocated for the purpose of establishing a garden program, and you can show that you still require funding assistance to complete your garden and kitchen, then you are still eligible to apply for these grants.

Q. Where can I find out more information about the Kitchen Garden program?
A. The About the Program section of the Foundation website explains ‘Our philosophy’. After seven years of ‘testing’, the recipe for a successful Program was developed with the input of all participating schools. Important reading is the book Kitchen Garden Cooking with Kids (Stephanie Alexander with Anna Dollard, Penguin Books 2006) which tells the story of the Kitchen Garden at Collingwood College, $39.95 plus $10 postage and handling. The Foundation also hosts monthly tours of the Kitchen Garden at Collingwood College and many of the other participating schools in Victoria are happy to open their doors to visitors from potential applicant schools at designated times. Please be sure to contact the school first. Some schools will have greater capacity to host visits than others. Copies of the book can be purchased via the Foundation online shop.
