Foundation

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation has been set up to seek funding for and oversee the development of Kitchen Garden projects in primary schools across Australia. We are a charitable organisation that relies totally on the generosity, shared vision and commitment of schools, volunteers, foundations, government, business and individuals.

Our aim is to pleasurably engage and encourage young Victorians in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing delicious and healthy food in the belief that such skills are essential to the development of life-long joyful and healthy eating habits. Many young people have little sense of where their food comes from, and little experience of sharing a meal convivially with others around a table. The Foundation has developed the highly successful Kitchen Garden Program for all children in Years 3-6. Read more about the Program.

The Kitchen Garden Program aims to connect children with the land, to help them understand what it is to nurture the soil and the seeds they plant in it, to live sustainably, and to take responsibility for their own physical wellbeing. We have seen that children are more likely to experiment with foods they have grown or prepared themselves, and that life-long eating habits are developed early. We have watched the confidence of children grow as they experiment with new flavours, or eat straight from a garden. We have witnessed their pleasure at passing around a plate of delicious food they have made themselves.

We believe this project has the potential affect the wellbeing not just of children, but of the land, of communities and of the nation.
