Milingimbi School is in the community of Milingimbi on Milingimbi Island, 440km east of Darwin. The population is approximately 1500 and the main languages spoken are Gupapuyngu, Djambarrpuyngu and Wangguri. The island is accessed by regular passenger air transport services and has an all weather airstrip. Milingimbi School offers education to students from early years to middle years as well as providing education services to three Homeland Learning Centres (HLCs). The HLCs are varying distances from Milingimbi with varied accessibility (often seasonal) to each site and they deliver education to small groups of students unable to attend the central school in the area. The school recognises cultural diversity and inclusivity. Milingimbi School student population is over 90 per cent Indigenous. Milingimbi are transitioning to a School-Community Partnership Agreement. Milingimbi has also been identified as a site under the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Service Delivery, as well as a Territory Growth Town under the NT Government's A Working Future initiative.
