In the classroom
The kitchen and garden inspire, inform and enhance classroom sessions – learning the science behind the life cycle of the plants they grow; creatively writing about the taste, smell and texture of the meals they cook; using geometry to plan a garden bed and drawing on food as an inspiration for artwork; kitchen garden kids really benefit from having real-world examples at their fingertips.

It shows how a Year 5-6 class linked garden and kitchen activities to literacy, numeracy, information technology, science, design, geography and SOSE. It is quite a long presentation, but gives a very good example of the many ways the Kitchen Garden can add relevance and provide depth to students’ classroom studies.

View »Curriculum Integration - Montello Primary School kitchen garden EOIs
In an engaging way of integrating the school curriculum with Kitchen Garden program learnings, Year 5/6 students were invited to apply for ‘positions’ in the kitchen and garden at Montello, Tasmania. Each student wrote an ‘expression of interest’, detailing why they wanted to work in the kitchen or garden, their experience and skills, and why they were excited by the Program. Each child made an appointment time for an interview with their classroom teacher, Kitchen and Garden Specialists and Program Coordinator. The panel was so impressed by the applicants’ enthusiasm that all of them were successful!
