A new year begins ...

Welcome back to all kitchen gardeners. At the Foundation office we have moved house and what a task that was. Every Melbourne staff member packed up her possessions and our Admin Manager Lucy did a Herculean job of directing the physical move, not to mention the transferring of our phones and all electronic systems. There were a few blackout days – hopefully you were all on holiday and not trying to make contact in mid-January.

Winter - time for a salad

A northern hemisphere change of scenery

A seasonal change ...

What a joy it is to watch the leaves changing colour before they finally fall. My ornamental grapevine is so beautiful. I am sweeping up armfuls of dry fallen leaves and packing them into a cleanup bag and storing the bag in a dry place. They will slowly break down over the next two months when they can then be added to the compost. I have poked a few holes in the bag to allow some air in to hasten the process.

Autumn brings new growth

Compared with the previous year the garden has been slow to produce and I am not the only vegetable gardener complaining about sulky, slow growth. But with the beginning of autumn has come welcome sunshine and a new burst of growth and ripening from capsicums, beans, tomatoes and eggplant.

The last weeks of summer already

Another year begins in the Kitchen Garden Program

In December the weather was so cold that all of my capsicum and eggplant plants sulked. Not a new leaf emerged in two weeks. I wondered if they would recover when or if the warmth arrives or will they just wither away beforehand?
