Fun in the sun at MFWF 2010

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation was proud to support this year’s Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, the foodie highlight of Melbourne’s busy social calendar!

MFWF 2010 served up 250 events across all of Victoria, and returned to the roots of good food by turning City Square, in the CBD, into a gardener’s paradise.

The glorious display of edible plants at the Metlink Edible Garden (provided by Foundation partner The Digger’s Club) illustrated our philosophy of growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal food. As Stephanie said, "It’s an undeniably powerful concept which encourages us to reassess our connections with food; celebrate our many regional food growers and providores; and get our own hands dirty."

Our own favourite cooks – skilled primary school students – hosted a Kitchen Garden Demonstration on Sunday 14 March. This tasty homegrown experience was enjoyed by participating children and parents, as well as thousands of onlookers.

As well as digging into the Edible Garden, we visited some of Melbourne’s most beautiful schools on the all-day Kitchen Garden Tour on Wednesday 17 March.

Participants enjoyed the sights, sounds, smells and, of course, tastes of our innovative kitchen gardens, as well as having Stephanie on hand to answer questions. Highlights of the day included wood-fired pizza ovens, teepee classrooms and a sumptuous lunch prepared by East Bentleigh Primary School students.

We extend a huge thank you to those schools who supported the tour, and the students and specialists of Collingwood College, Westgarth Primary School and Whitehorse Primary School who put on a great show at City Square. Particular thanks go to Desley Insall who ensured that the demo ran like clockwork. Thanks for sharing the joys of kitchen gardening with the broader community!
