Evaluation launch a great day for the Kitchen Garden Program

June 15 was a proud day for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, when the results of a formal evaluation of the Kitchen Garden Program were released.

The 2 ½-year study was conducted jointly between researchers from The University of Melbourne and Deakin University, who studied the progress of Kitchen Garden Program participants at Castlemaine, Donald, Foster, Heatherhill, Melrose, Pinewood, Spensley Street, Sunshine North, Surfside, Tongala, Westgarth and Yarrunga Primary Schools.

Principal Grace Conway and her students at Westgarth PS were gracious enough to provide their kitchen and garden as a backdrop for the morning’s media launch, which was attended by all the major Australian media representatives and highlighted widely in news broadcasting over the following days.

The evaluation heralded the Kitchen Garden Program as a major success, and has highlighted some key findings that are positive results for all participating schools. The day proved to be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Program in action to media, government and stakeholders involved in the evaluation.

Thank you to all students, staff, parents and volunteers who gave up their time to help support the media launch and provide everyone with a beautiful lunch including dhal, chapattis, tabouleh and some beautiful dips!

Thanks also go to the schools who were happy to be involved in the evaluation process – it couldn’t have been done without you!

"We now have confirmed what we previously knew anecdotally. The Program is effective in changing children’s behaviour and response to food in a positive way." Stephanie Alexander OAM.
