Western Australian Demonstration School celebrates!

Palmyra Primary School in Western Australia is the latest state Demonstration School in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, recently celebrating its official launch with whole-of-school festivities.

Special guests included Stephanie Alexander, Foundation CEO Ange Barry, representatives from the Federal Department for Health and Ageing, local Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey, the Honourable Peter Tinley and guests from other WA schools participating in the Kitchen Garden Program. Guests were invited on a tour of the school’s thriving kitchen garden, fondly dubbed The Pally Patch. Student Councillors greeted them at the school entrance and showed them through to the beautiful garden area. From there, they were taken on a tour of the Patch by the school’s Environment Officers, who enthusiastically explained various aspects of the garden including the productive vegetable and herb beds, the worm farms, compost bays and water tanks.

Following the official proceedings guests enjoyed a delicious morning tea, showcasing the fresh garden harvest. The newly finished wood-fired oven helped produce the most delicious pizzas.

“As a Demonstration School, Palmyra is going along very, very well,” enthused Stephanie. “It is a fabulous garden, but what stood out for me today was the interest and the degree of articulation from the children who gave me the tour. When you questioned them they really did understand what was going on in the garden, and that was very impressive.”

The school’s next step is to complete their four-point kitchen classroom. “This is a program that is much more than just about growing beautiful things. It’s about how to cook with them and how to sit around the table and enjoy them together”.

Congratulations Palmyra PS – a very welcome new member of the Kitchen Garden community!
