Stephanie named Victorian of the Year

The very prestigious 2010 Victorian of the Year honour has been awarded to our founder Stephanie Alexander in recognition of her outstanding public and community service.

The awards are given in honour of Victoria Day on 1 July, marking the state of Victoria’s formal separation from NSW in 1851. Victoria Day awards those individuals and groups who have made significant and valuable contributions to Victorian communities. Previous winners include Tim Costello and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch.

Stephanie received the award from Acting Lord Mayor Susan Riley at a formal ceremony in Melbourne’s Swanston Hall. The celebration also included a re-enactment of the original Proclamation of Separation and a traditional flag-raising ceremony.

Victoria Day Council Chairman Mr Norman Kennedy stated that this is “an excellent opportunity for us to look to those community members who have made outstanding contributions to their fellow community members and celebrate their achievements.”

This award recognises Stephanie's outstanding contribution to the lives of Victorians throughout her career, and most recently through her work with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

Congratulations Stephanie – a well-deserved honour indeed.
