Celebrating Food Revolution Day 2013
17-05-2013The entire Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation team gathered for a shared lunch of delicious seasonal foods to celebrate Food Revolution Day – a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food, essential cooking skills and awareness of the importance of food education world-wide initiated by Jamie Oliver. With our interstate team members in town for training this week it was a great opportunity to spend time together over a delicious meal and show off our cooking prowess!

International Composting Awareness Week Australia (ICAW), is a week of activities, events and publicity to improve awareness about the importance of this valuable organic resource and to promote compost use, knowledge and products. We can compost to help scrap carbon pollution by avoiding landfilling organic materials and helping to build healthier soils.

The Barooga PS garden in summer
13-03-2013An excerpt from the latest Barooga Primary School newsletter: ‘Last week was very hot working in the garden in the afternoons. After quickly completing some necessary tasks, the classes retreated to the cool of the classroom to write descriptions of what is growing in our garden this summer. I was very impressed by the older students' recall of the different types of fruits and vegetables we are growing. Below are some examples of the students' work. Proof the Kitchen Garden Program works
07-03-2013More children are taking up cooking at home and starting backyard veggie gardens after participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program. Findings of a new Australian Government-funded independent evaluation have the potential to change the way educators view the benefits of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program in Australian primary schools. The evaluation found real health behaviour change for children, families and school communities participating in the Program.

27-02-2013Students from Summerdale Primary School were wonderful Kitchen Garden Program ambassadors at this year’s Festivale in Launceston, an annual celebration of Tasmania’s food and wine scene. Stephanie Alexander and members of the Kitchen Garden Foundation team were invited to Festivale to run a Children’s Produce Hunt and planting activity as part of the weekend-long celebration.

Sam's learning difficulties overcome in the kitchen
25-02-2013The Kitchen Garden Program provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge, skills and confidence and has proven success engaging students who are not traditional learners. One of these students, Sam, recently graduated from Berrima Primary School. Berrima PS is a small school with a big heart and great community support. On joining the National Program in 2010, the School already had an established veggie garden . Louise, Sam’s mother, describes the School’s kitchen as spectacular and full of light – an inspiring environment for Sam who has dyslexia.

Italian summer cooking and autumn's on the way
19-02-2013The Kitchen Garden Foundation team is thrilled to present a stellar line-up of over thirty-five cooking and gardening workshops for 2013 to get you growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal food. Commencing on 23 February, the workshops are run by experienced cooks and gardeners in our beautiful Learning Centre at Collingwood College. The sessions are all about growing or cooking seasonal produce and highlight the intrinsic link between the kitchen and garden.
