Great day for a bus tour
07-12-2011 November saw our first-ever Adelaide Kitchen Garden Schools Tour sold out and greatly enjoyed by a busload of happy kitchen gardeners.Guest-hosted by our South Australian Ambassador, the lovely Maggie Beer, first stop was Kilkenny Primary School. Proud Kilkenny students led their visitors around the school's wetland area and outdoor classroom. This was followed by a tour of the garden and orchard, and on to the school's beautiful home-style kitchen.
The group then moved on to Woodend Primary School, a proud Kitchen Garden School with a strong local support and a large volunteer contingent including a visiting Irish grandparent who was very passionate about the work the school is doing. Woodend's beautiful garden is host to an array of artwork as well as an ‘Alien Garden' that was devised and designed by students. This garden includes plants designated by the children as looking a little extraterrestrial - artichokes and so on!
The Woodend students and Kitchen Specialist, Mandy Whitrod, put on a beautiful lunch including sour cream pastry tarts with silver beet & ricotta filling, roast tomatoes, pumpkin soup and pumpkin bread, graciously served by Maggie herself. The school harvested so much pumpkin last summer they are still using them!
Third stop was Pimpala Primary School. There was lots of interest in Pimpala's garden art, which was done with the help of an Indigenous Artist in residence. The artwork reflects an emphasis on bush tucker in the garden, exposing students to a wide range of non-traditional edible plants. Pimpala's garden also uses a lot of recycled building materials, including a bathtub converted into a worm farm (guests learnt a lot!)
On to the fourth stop: Aldinga Beach R-7, where the Year 4 choir greeted the tour group with a hearty rendition of ‘I like pots and pans'. Students took visitors on a tour of their garden, orchard and kitchen, pointing out the recently increased size, new chook pen and chooks, masses of outdoor artwork and garden beds in the shape of butterflies. The children were also very proud of the mosaic work they had done, including a locally quarried stone wall with the words Grow, Harvest, Prepare, Share tiled into it using broken crockery! It looks fantastic.
It was a very proud day for the students, and an engaging day full of fun and discovery for the visitors, may who said they would love to go on another tour tomorrow.
We'd like to thank all the schools involved for showing off the Kitchen Garden Program with such pride, and we look forward to running more tours in South Australia showcasing the great work done by other Kitchen Garden Schools. And thanks to Maggie for being such a fabulous host!
