The joy of chooks in the home garden
12-07-2012

They’re great with the kids, you get fresh eggs and if you think an aquarium is relaxing, just wait till you’ve watched a hen scratch around for a while! Fleur from BookAChook, specialists in bantams in the backyard, recently ran an informative workshop on the world of chooks and how to set them up in the home or school garden.

Some of the participants on the day were already chook owners and others were just beginning to gather knowledge before setting up a chook house and welcoming their feathered friends. The varied levels of knowledge meant discussions on the day were diverse and Fleur confidently catered to each participant’s needs.

The importance of extensive research before obtaining chooks was emphasised. They are very susceptible to diseases if not cared for properly or if their conditions are not suitable. Fleur provided a wealth of resources to the participants to ensure they had all they need to know. She also discussed thrifty ways of creating the perfect environment for chooks, highlighting that chook-ownership needn’t to be an expensive task and has many rewards.

The inclement weather meant the session was run inside at the Learning Centre rather than in the beautiful productive garden. Fleur brought along her Pekin chooks for everyone to meet and they greatly enhanced the workshop. They were beautiful and very well behaved; the perfect example of happy, healthy chooks.

The workshop was a great success and we wish all the participants well with their feathered friend pursuits!

  • ‘Workshop met my expectations and there were loads of resources provided for us to follow up on.’
