Going great guns at Gunnedah South PS
07-08-2012Gunnedah South Public School, in the New England region of New South Wales, officially launched their Kitchen Garden Program in early August.
The ceremony was held in the hall with all the children, VIPs, parents and community members. The school had received $120,000 from a local mining company, which they put towards building a magnificent kitchen. Foundation staff member Robyn Cook spoke on behalf of the Foundation and asked the children to put up their hand if they had eaten something in the kitchen they had never eaten before. Almost every child raised their hand!
After a lively talk by two of the students, school Principal Emma Jeffery spoke, then the P&C President as well as a representative from donating mining company. Robyn then handed over the symbolic red watering can to the Gunnedah South PS Program Coordinator Gary Humphries. They unveiled the launch plaque before the whole community watched a special presentation on the school’s kitchen garden journey.
A tour of the garden and kitchen followed. The VIPs were then invited to a three-course lunch and other guests enjoyed light refreshments. It was a fabulous and celebratory day, with the children and kitchen volunteers operating like a dream team even though the children had never served food in such a formal manner before! Congratulations to all at Gunnedah South PS.
