Celebration despite a wet day for Brunswick South’s launch
15-08-2012It would have taken more than a cold, wet and windy day to dampen spirits at Brunswick South Primary School last week when the School hosted an enthusiastic launch event for their Kitchen Garden Program.
Students took visitors on tours of their beautiful productive garden and proudly named each and every plant. Special guests included State MP Jane Garret, Stephanie Alexander, Foundation CEO Ange Barry and a large contingent of the Brunswick South PS community.
The whole school took part in a special assembly where each grade sang a song – some adapted the words to Food Glorious Food and ABBA’s Honey Honey. There was a beautiful harvest table of produce from the garden and examples of how Italian immersion is being used in the Program. It was a wonderful celebration of the ways the Kitchen Garden Program contributes to school life.
Speeches were made into a fabulous carrot microphone created especially for the day. The local bowls club president spoke about the joy it brought to the club to be able to contribute to the Program at the school through their donation of lino for the kitchen floor. The Program has really helped the School to connect with the community and provided numerous opportunities for further community input and donations.
Students served a delicious afternoon tea which they had spent the whole morning preparing for the special event. Everyone was treated to a delicious spread consisting of:
- Moroccan pumpkin and chickpea soup
- Silver beet and goats cheese soufflé
- Crostino with beetroot dip
- Crostino with radish, fetta and yoghurt
- Apple and pomegranate syrup tartlets with ricotta
It was a truly heart-warming day. Thanks to the students and community of Brunswick South PS, we look forward to seeing the Kitchen Garden Program flourish and grow at the School.
