Kitchen Garden Schools at MFWF
11-03-2011

The King Valley Cluster*, North Melbourne PS and Sunshine North PS joined the Kitchen Garden Foundation on 6 March to participate in a very exciting Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Foodie Family Day.

The day began early for many of our kitchen garden kids, some leaving the King Valley at 5.30 am to get to Federation Square in time to set up their pavilions. But what a fabulous day - there was much interest from the public in the kitchen and garden activities the students demonstrated:

  • North Melbourne PS demonstrated making gnocchi and kept people excited and amazed with several different sauces and the remarkable gnocchi-making skills of the children, making up some of their costs with gold-coin donations
  • Sunshine North PS did a great job showcasing the garden element of the Program, demonstrating and discussing compost, seedling potting, seed saving and worm farms, and selling ‘Sunny Worm Wee', ‘Sunny Seeds' and seedlings
  • The King Valley cluster put on a fabulous display of pasta, pesto and curry paste-making and showcased an aquaponics display. They also sold dried pasta, preserves and sauces.**

The Foundation team was also represented, with Stephanie signing books and talking to the public about the Program, and the Foundation team making sure everyone knew about the upcoming Australian Government grants.

It's great to see our well-deserving Kitchen Garden Schools being recognised for their achievements, both in the public eye as well as in a popular food-industry event such as the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. We congratulate all the schools involved and thank them for being such wonderful advocates of the Program.

*The King Valley cluster is made up of Edi Upper PS, Greta PS, Moyhu PS, Myhrree PS and Whitfield PS, who all share the Kitchen Garden Program.

**Please note that the King Valley still has a little leftover stock of some really delicious school-made curry pastes and pesto - please contact Howard Gibson, Principal of Edi Upper Primary School for more information.
