Inala State School enjoys a proud launch
05-04-2011Being a school with high cultural diversity, it was fitting that Inala SS officially launched its Kitchen Garden Program in conjunction with Harmony Day - where ‘everyone belongs'.
Principal Sue Clark and Deputy Principal Lyrienne Cook opened the proceedings by relating how every child in the school participates in the Program weekly and thanking the Australian Government.
Then the children the stepped up to speak of their experiences in the kitchen and garden. They shared stories of how they had been measuring the rainfall and keeping a chart to record the sunrise and sunset everyday.
Milton Dick (Councillor for Richlands) thanked the Kitchen Garden Foundation for creating the Program, acknowledged the school for its accomplishment and unveiled the plaque to a very proud school community.
Following the formalities the school enjoyed performances by Polynesian dancers, African dancers and Vietnamese students, while the students' handmade ‘Scarecrow Stephanie' danced in the wind.
The celebration of course included a kitchen class feast the children had spent all week preparing for, with dishes such as:
- Sarma (stuffed cabbage)
- Capsicums stuffed with rice, meat, walnuts&mushrooms
- Banana chilli stuffed withcheese & fresh herbs
- Gibanica (cheese & egg pastry)
- Cherry pitawith a yoghurt custard
- Apple pita
- Bundevera (sweet pumpkin pastry)
- Cabbage salad
- Green salad with a pumpkin seed dressing.
But in the spirit of the day all the families were asked to bring in something too, and certainly delivered with streams of food flowing in for the feast, including traditional dishes from Africa, Vietnam, India, Samoa and more - a very impressive effort from the whole school community, resulting in some very proud kitchen garden kids presenting their families' dishes.
Everyone shared their meals under the shade throughout the hot afternoon, reflecting on their experiences throughout their kitchen garden journey and the atmosphere of Harmony Day.
Congratulations to the whole team at Inala SS, who have certainly done the Kitchen Garden Program proud and we look forward to sharing more of your stories.Back to Latest News
