Public workshops for improving your kitchen garden skills
05-07-2011Want to learn some kitchen garden techniques? The Foundation is running public workshops led by experts in the beautiful kitchen and teaching garden at our Learning Centre at Collingwood College. These classes are based on the philosophy of the Kitchen Garden Program.
Winter is the best time to prune fruit trees. So rug up, bring along your secateurs and join Chris England of Merrywood Plants on 16 July to learn the secrets of perfect fruit tree pruning. Pruning helps to promote flowers and fruit as well as controlling pests and disease. Chris will lead a hands-on class using existing trees in the Learning Centre garden. A must to give your trees the best chance of producing a bumper crop, just think of all the delicious fresh fruit and preserves you'll enjoy during the fruiting season!
Delicious fresh pasta and tasty sauces! Saturday 2 July at the Learning Centre kitchen saw the very first handmade pasta workshop with Keryn Ursi of La Micia Cooking. Participants learnt how to make filled and unfilled fresh pasta and complementary sauces before sharing the fruits of their labour around a table and discussing the new techniques they learnt.
Thank you all for organising such a fantastic class. We had great fun enjoying how to make the different types of pasta and thoroughly enjoyed eating them too! (Kate, pasta workshop participant)
Later in the year Teresa Oates will run three workshops focused on the art of making home-style Southern Italian food. Teresa is well known for writing cookbook Mangia! Mangia! with Angela Villella. Mangia! Mangia! is based on traditional Calabrian recipes and methods passed down through the generations.
Garden workshops for the rest of the year include a session on getting your vegetable garden started, composting, building no-dig beds, propogating seedlings, worm wicking and building wicking beds - all timed around planning your spring and summer kitchen garden.
Places are limited in each workshop, so check out our public workshop page for more information and to book your spot early. Special rates are available to Kitchen Garden Program Schools and Kitchen Garden Program Subscribers - please log in before making your booking.
And don't forget to keep up to date with the latest news on our public workshops by joining our mailing list.
