Snug PS launches in splendid style
03-08-2011

One of our most southern schools, Snug Primary, 30 km south of Hobart in Tasmania, launched their Kitchen Garden Program recently amid much celebration.

Guests were warmly welcomed by Program Coordinator Sue Hastie, who led a tour round the garden. Visitors were hugely impressed by the scale of the garden and the amount of work achieved. (The amount of community involvement in the Program was very apparent, with working bees and donations of materials and time all crucial factors in the success of the bush-themed garden.)

The Snug PS students performed a lovely skit and display of circus skills in front of a large audience of approximately 100 children and 100 guests and parents.

Special guest Senator for Tasmania Carol Brown made a very well-received speech that included acknowledgement of the schools' new BER-funded buildings. Principal Maureen McKeown spoke about how proud the whole school was of its achievements, and Foundation Project officer Josie Charles spoke about the benefits of the Kitchen Garden Program and presented the school's red watering can. Minister for Education and Skills Nick McKim was another special guest and supporter.

The delicious celebration menu included:

  • Wattle seed damper with bush tomato dip and lemon native pepper berry butter
  • Antipasto platter
  • Smoked salmon, pickled vegetables, pickled cherries, cheese and biscuits (using fresh salmon donated by local producer Tassal and smoked in the school kitchen)
  • Apple & goat's cheese tarts
  • Gourmet mini pizzas
  • Lemon curd tartlets
  • Zesty orange cupcakes

The special day also included a tree-planting session with Minister McKim and Senator Brown, along with the Snug PS students and staff, who all helped create the school's new Apple Avenue.

Snug PS was a successful applicant in the Australian Government's second round of funding for the Kitchen Garden Program in 2010. We congratulate the whole school community on their fabulous day celebrating all their hard work - we look forward to hearing more of your stories and achievements.
