Perth Kitchen Garden Schools Tour
24-08-2011Despite a blast of rainy weather on the day, no spirits were dampened as an enthusiastic busload of guests joined our first-ever tour of Perth Kitchen Garden Schools.
The tour visited established Kitchen Garden Schools throughout Perth that have been running the Kitchen Garden Program for several years and are now reaping the benefits. Tour participants were able to view kitchen and garden classes in action, speak to Foundation staff and school staff, and enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch.
Stephanie, CEO Ange Barry, Schools Project Manager Bianca Moses and new Project Officer for Western Australia, Marcelle Coakley, joined over 50 guests on the bus. The participants ranged from interested Members of Parliament, to new Kitchen Garden Specialists and staff, to enthralled members of the public.
The tour visited East Maddington Primary School, Westfield Park Primary School, Bertram Primary School (where guests enjoyed a wonderful school-made lunch), Spearwood Alternative School and Palmyra Primary School. All the participants were and full of admiration for what has been achieved in these schools, and everyone came away really inspired by what they had seen - beautiful productive gardens, fabulous home-style kitchens, dedicated teaching staff and some really proud and knowledgeable students.
Guests learned all about what was happening in the different gardens, and were treated to a stunning lunch menu of Moroccan sweet potato, carrot & chickpea soup; Chicken kofta; Spinach, oven-roast tomato & bocconcini salad, Eggplant couscous, Roast pumpkin & feta pies; and Apple, rhubarb & blueberry crumble prepared by the students at Bertram!
The whole day was a great success, and the Foundation really appreciates the time and energy of each school in hosting our visitors and allowing them to get closer to the Kitchen Garden Program in action.
