49 more Kitchen Garden Schools across Australia!
17-10-2011

Another 49 primary schools have joined the community under the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program, funded by the Australian Government.

On 17 October Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon joined local Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese and Stephanie at Stanmore Public School to announce the new Kitchen Garden Schools. These schools will all receive funding from the Australian Government to begin implementing the Kitchen Garden Program, receiving up to $60,000 each for garden and kitchen infrastructure.

‘Teaching kids how to make healthy choices is an investment in our future,' Minister Roxon said. ‘Engaging kids in growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh food promotes healthy eating and healthy lifestyles that will see these kids grow into healthy adults.'

Local Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese said, ‘This is a practical way of getting kids involved in making healthy food choices - it teaches kids that healthy food can be fun,' Mr Albanese said. ‘The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden National Program aims to improve nutrition and develop lifelong healthy eating habits among children, which is part of the Government's commitment to preventive health.'

Stephanie thanked the Australian Government for its support of the Kitchen Garden Program, which has enabled the Foundation to roll out the Kitchen Garden Program in schools all over the country, resulting in tens of thousands of children getting into the garden and into the kitchen.

‘This program has really opened up kids eyes when it comes to the joys of fresh food - we're teaching them that tasty, fresh food can be both fun and good for you,' said Stephanie.

This was the fourth round of funding in the Australian Government's $12.8 million contribution to the Program, bringing the total number of schools under this funding to 178, and our total number of Kitchen Garden Schools to 259!
