Springtime at Collingwood College
18-10-2010A lovely, productive day was had by all at the latest Collingwood College spring fair. The local community came out in force to make the day a great success, despite the unpredictable Melbourne weather and the threat of rain, which luckily didn't eventuate!
Many of the fair's visitors came specifically to learn more about the Kitchen Garden Program, and were very impressed with the thriving garden, which is really an oasis in the busy city area. The school offered tours of the premises, many lunch stalls including pizza from the wood-fired oven, lots of kids activities and musical performances throughout the day. Parents also took advantage of fundraising opportunities with pony and motorbike rides, produce and plant stalls and a silent auction. A popular activity was held in the school garden, where children could plant vegetable seedlings in their own self-decorated pots, then take them home to grow and harvest.
As the College is the original Kitchen Garden School and site of our new Learning Centre, the Foundation team held some activities of our own. Stephanie signed copies of her popular books and chatted to visitors alongside CEO Ange Barry. Staff discussed the benefits of the Program with a curious and very supportive public and fielded many cooking and gardening questions, while visitors looked through the new Kitchen Garden Learning Centre, which incorporates the facilities used by students in kitchen classes. We were thrilled by the response from the public, many of whom remarked that they wished they had facilities like these when they went to school. Outside, a gumboot-throwing competition and treasure hunt proved fun for all.
Not only does the annual spring fair raise funds for the school, it's also a great way to gather the community together and show off all the wonderful things going on at the College - it's a great day in the kitchen garden calendar. A big thank you to all who attended - see you next year!
