Farnborough SS flying high
28-10-2010

A beautiful, balmy Queensland day was the setting for the latest Kitchen Garden School to launch - Farnborough SS.

The launch event was a fun and successful day, with approximately 200 visitors coming through the gates to learn more about the Kitchen Garden Program and get involved in the school activities.

The morning began with harvesting potatoes and carrots. It was wonderful to see how excited the children were when harvesting, especially hearing them announce that they had the biggest carrot over and over!

The day was filled with workshops that included learning about worms, permaculture and plant propagation. Kids activities and a cooking display put on by the students were accompanied by live acoustic performances from local musicians. Students made pesto sausage rolls, lemon cordial and a delightful tomato, eggplant and basil dip for spectators who eagerly ate them up.

The official ceremony party included Kirsten Livermore MP, Federal Member for Capricornia, who also spoke on behalf of Department of Health & Ageing Nicola Roxon.) Kirsten spoke of Nicola's passion for food and enthusiasm for the Kitchen Garden Program. Other honoured guest included Paul Hoolahan, State Member for Kepple, Bill Ludwick, from the Rockhampton Regional Council, and Carol Butler Mader, Farnborough SS Principal.

The most moving speech was made by a parent, Amanda Campbell, who spoke about her son, Jake, who has autism. She spoke intimately of the impact the Kitchen Garden Program has had on Jake: "It's funny how Jake's aide said that he was struggling with reading, but could follow recipes no worries. I believe it's all about finding what works for the kids and going with it.'' She went onto say, "The Program is definitely not just a garden or a kitchen. It is my Jake's happy place."

While the launch wasn't intended to make money, the school did raise almost $1000 towards their Program, and all participants had a great deal of fun. Congratulations Farnborough, and happy kitchen gardening!
