Junior Masterchef judge surprises students in WA
28-10-2010Renowned cook, Junior Masterchef judge and local Western Australian supporter of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, Anna Gare, surprised the students of Harmony Primary School when she popped in to join the judging panel as they participated in their very own Masterchef challenge this week.
The Year 4 & 5 students were challenged to develop recipes and prepare and share dishes using fresh produce grown in their very own kitchen garden. "By having our own Junior Masterchef challenge, our students are showcasing the skills and experience they have developed through their participation in the Kitchen Garden Program," explained Harmony PS' Kitchen Specialist Penny Hardy. "I am amazed at how quickly these young children have become confident, accomplished cooks with a fantastic understanding of fresh food, flavours and techniques. The fact Anna Gare is here to support them is just the icing on the cake'".
Anna was impressed with the choice of dishes and the calm approach the students had when asked to present a minimum of two dishes using a produce-driven mystery box. Along with fellow judges Melissa Parke, Federal Member for Fremantle, and Logan Howlett, Mayor of the City of Cockburn, Anna took her duties and deliberation process very seriously. "I am amazed at the skills and creativity on display here today," enthused Anna. "I cannot believe these students have been participating in the Kitchen Garden Program for only a year and a half!"
After tasting, and much discussion, prizes were award to Tamlyn, for her Indian spiced potatoes, herb & cheese muffins and orange spiced bread & butter pudding (Anna asked for the recipe!); Ethan, with his freshly squeezed beetroot & orange juice and pink scrambled eggs served with a green potato waffle; and Liam, who won the challenge with his potato & green veggie layer cake and pancakes with orange syrup.
