Clarendon Primary launches the Kitchen Garden Program
10-11-2010On the 125th birthday of this small and very pretty Adelaide Hills school, 55 new kitchen garden kids gathered staff and families together to celebrate the official launch of their Kitchen Garden Program.
The outdoor celebrations began with Governor Kevin Scarce and partner Liz arriving to commemorate the birthday of the school. More guests of honour included past alumni, who participated in a Clarendon PS trivia quiz and wrote their memories down so a book about the school can be collated.
Education Minister Jay Weatherill arrived and was given a tour of the facilities, and speeches were given by Minister Weatherill, Foundation Project Officer Karyn Duance, Clarendon PS Principal Neil Beverley and the Chair of the Governing Council. The new BER building was declared officially launched by Mr Weatherill, and then he also declared the Kitchen Garden Program open, handing over the watering can to Principal Beverley.
There were stalls of spicy apricot jam, seedlings and books and the students gave tours of the garden, which is expanding to include a new area between the BER resource centre/library and the kitchen.
To the credit of the school, the whole community had worked astronomically hard to get everything back in order after a very destructive break-in over the previous weekend, which had caused great damage to the newly completed kitchen, to seedlings in the hothouse, and also to some classrooms. Their efforts really paid off with a beautiful launch day everyone could be really proud of.
After the official event the bbq was pressed into action so that everyone could gather on the fabulous outdoor learning area deck for lunch. What a great day - congratulations Clarendon PS - welcome to the kitchen garden community!
