Alyangula Area School is located in the mining community of Alyangula which is on Groote Eylandt. This island is 650km east of Darwin and 50km off the Arnhem Land coast in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The population of the township is approximately 1200, the majority of whom work for the Groote Eylandt Mining Company. The traditional owners of Groote Eylandt are the Warnindilyakwa people, but are referred to by their language name Anindilyakwa. Access to the island is via daily passenger air transport. There is a bitumen road from Alyangula to the community of Angurugu on the island; most other roads on the island are unsealed so a 4WD is essential. The island contains a number of rivers and streams which may make travel throughout the island difficult. The school is part of the Ngakwurra Langawa College which incorporates each of the four schools within the Groote Eylandt archipelago. Alyangula Area School caters for a multicultural group of children from early years to middle years. Senior years programs are offered through the NT Open Education Centre.
