Aquaponic systems combine hydroponic growing techniques with a fish tank to create a self-sufficient and highly successful growing environment. This introductory class will take you through the basic setup of aquaponics, which is very popular in Kitchen Garden Schools.

You will learn how to grow abundant produce and edible fish in an efficient setup you can easily create in your home garden.

 

Details

Ian will show you how to grow the most fantastic tasting fish and vegetables using this smart and productive cultivation technique. The class will cover fish selection, system design, plant selection and system maintenance. You will learn how to use design principles and recycled materials to build your own low-maintenance system.

Ian Campbell has been teaching aquaculture, conservation and land management subjects for the past ten years and has been running his own aquaponics system since 2004. He helped to design the first commercial organic aquaponics system which won an award on The New Inventors in 2006, and has worked with leading international aquaculture engineer Professor Tom Losordo.

Tea/coffee and biscuits are provided, you are welcome to bring your own lunch if you would like something more substantial.

Enter the College via the main reception area, which is located near the end of Cromwell Street, and follow the signs to the kitchen.

Public transport is often a good way to get to Collingwood College, with Collingwood train station only minutes away. However, on Saturdays there is usually parking available in the immediate vicinity of the College. Other parking options are generally the north and south sides of Hoddle Street, in Gipps Street and in the parking zone at the end of Islington Street.
