Wicking beds are ideal for arid climates or where irrigation is unavailable, and this session will see passionate wicker Julie Ellenberger pass on her knowledge and skills in a hands-on session. You'll learn how to convert an existing garden bed into a wicking bed over two hours from 10:15 to 12:15, and learn everything you need to know to use the same technique in your school.
Details
Julie has been a dedicated volunteer in garden classes at Golden Beach State School for over 12 months and has built many wicking beds during her time there, at home and with friends. Julie loves wicking beds so much that she now teaches others how to convert existing beds.

Â
Working with the materials supplied you will be hands-on in converting a garden bed from a conventional raised bed to a wicking bed that will only need weekly or fortnightly watering. Once the infrastructure is assembled, you will fill the tank, lasagne style, and plant a range of seedlings. You'll leave understanding how the plants pull the water from the reservoir and how to maintain your new wicking bed, and you'll be able to pass on your knowledge and skills to your students.
You will need your garden clothes and closed shoes for this activity.
