This course has been designed to provide early years educators with the activities, ideas and inspiration to introduce young children to the joys of growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing food.
Engaging Learners in the Early Years includes self-directed learning which can be done at your own pace. The six modules of the course include both text and video-based instruction which deliver the course outcomes, as well as assessment quizzes and the opportunity to share ideas and interact with other educators.

Course objectives

  • Understand the pleasurable food education philosophy in order to introduce young children to positive food habits.
  • Learn how to create and facilitate meaningful early years learning experiences in the kitchen and garden spaces.
  • Receive ideas for practical, theme-based activities in the kitchen that align to the Early Years Learning Framework.
  • Gain ideas for practical, theme-based activities in the garden that align to the Early Years Learning Framework.
  • Test your knowledge and ask questions about engaging early learners, and share tips, activity ideas, recipes and more.

Course outcomes

This course is intended to support early years educators implementing the Education and Care National Quality Framework.
Completing the Engaging Learners in the Early Years online course reinforces the following element of the National Quality Standards:
Element 1.1.1 Curriculum decision making contributes to each child’s learning and development outcomes in relation to their identity, connection with community, wellbeing, confidence as learners and effectiveness as communicators.

Getting started

You don’t need any equipment to complete this course. However, we encourage you to run some of the activities with your learners and discuss some of the outcomes and learnings in the Discussion forums.
