Chickens make a marvellous addition to any school garden, but we find that they also raise plenty of questions as to how best incorporate them into school life. Karina Martini, Garden Specialist at Rostrata PS, joins us to lead a masterclass on keeping chooks in schools.

Karina was initially a passionate parent on the Kitchen Garden Program establishment committee at Rostrata PS in Willetton, and has now been the Garden Specialist there for the last three and half years. She combines a keen interest in permaculture and the sustainable aspects of gardening with a background as a teacher.

This session will look at the Rostrata PS example to explain how the introduction of these wonderful creatures eventually resulted in a wider school interest in the garden. She will cover Education Department  regulations, the necessary paperwork, along with general care and maintenance of chickens that can be done by children, organising rosters for weekends, and much more.
