
Kitchen Garden Education in the Secondary Years: STEAM supports real world, hands-on learning connections between the kitchen garden and the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and maths (STEAM).
The course is designed to be self-directed and interactive with opportunities to share ideas for planning and teaching a kitchen garden program in the secondary years through a STEAM lens. Its five modules include videos, case studies, teacher notes and student learning tasks that encourage integrated curriculum design across a range of teaching strategies.

Course objectives
- Develop a shared language around pleasurable food education in your secondary schooling context.
- Consider STEAM as a lens for your kitchen garden program.
- Develop ideas for appropriate teaching strategies to use in your kitchen garden program.
- Gain practical teaching ideas and student learning templates for STEAM-based learning in the kitchen and garden.
- Work alongside other educators to share ideas, resources and teaching strategies related to the integration of STEAM learning in the kitchen garden program.

Course outcomes
The outcomes of this course are aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).Completing Kitchen Garden Education in the Secondary Years: STEAM will contribute evidence toward 3.0 hours of accredited professional development in maintaining the following standards:
- 2.1 Content and teaching strategies of the teaching area.
- 3.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs.
- 6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice.
