‘What You Need to Know to Grow’ empowers participants to begin the garden aspect of their kitchen garden program. In this workshop, we will cover the basics to building a successful garden: sun, soil, water and mulch. We will also cover practical advice and tips for gardening with children and young people, as well finding your own way to teach the joy and wonder of growing your own food. We will discuss three of the ten Kitchen Garden Program Fundamentals, which will prepare you to deliver a best-practice Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. Finally, we will have a question and answer session for participants to be inspired and prepared to get in the garden and grow food with children.
This workshop is perfect for educators new to gardening or those who have little gardening experience. It is suitable for all ages and is designed to help you get started – especially if you’re not sure where to begin!

During this one-hour workshop, our presenters will cover:
- key factors for creating a successful kitchen garden
- a guide to building a garden space for children and young people
- understanding the importance of your coordinating team in the success of your program
- a collection of great produce to grow when starting a garden, with a guide to planting seeds and seedlings
- developing garden experiences for children and young people.
