Speakers will share expertise about kitchen garden classes, practical ideas – and there will be plenty of opportunities for sharing experiences and resources. It's also suitable for staff from mainstream schools with special needs students.

Details

The theme for this workshop is Sensory Learning and Special Needs. All educators, both mainstream and special needs, will benefit from this exploration of how senses affect what and when and how students are willing to learn. The day will offer a balance of practical tips and resources, as well as presentations by speakers from related specialist disciplines who can bring fresh perspective to the Kitchen Garden Programs. 

Keynote speaker:

We are delighted to welcome Steven Wells, Program Coordinator and Horticultural Therapist, to speak about sensory garden design. Steven Wells was voted the Gardener of the Year 2012 by viewers of the successful Gardening Australia television program for his work as a horticultural therapist, nurse and creator of the sensory and healing gardens at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre. Steven is a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Horticultural Therapist and Gardens and Grounds Project Officer at Austin Health. 

We will also be offering various peer led workshops and a hands-on sensory experiences to get you thinking.

Before the day: 
We ask attendees to consider the following topics. On the day, we will split into groups, one group per topic, to form support networks and special interest groups that you can take with you for your future kitchen garden journey: 
•    Kids working with kids - mentorships and connections
•    Literacy tools and teaching
•    Garden design for sensory learning
•    Kitchen considerations and sensory questions

Sharing bar:
Please bring resources, photographs (maximum 20 please), student work samples, planning documents, garden plans, and recipes that you would like to share! These should be things you are willing to allow others to take copies or photographs of.

We will have a ‘Sharing bar’ laptop where we can photograph paper items and upload/copy/download digital items. Please bring a USB stick or similar if you have digital items to share or would like to gather resources and ideas from others. 

Bringing a camera of your own might be a good idea. 

Please also aim to arrive from 8.30am, to be ready for a 9am start.
