Workshop Details:
Fruit tree management
Peter Young is an award winning nurseryman with over 30 years experience propagating and growing fruit trees at his Birdwood Nursery. In this workshop, you will plant fruit trees and learn how to choose tree varieties, site and the best way to ensure a bountiful harvest to minimise disease and pests.
Basket weaving & landcare
Learn to identify environmental weeds and turn them into something functional and beautiful. Basket weaving has been practiced in every culture across the centuries but this skill has been largely lost to us. This workshop will combine two elements, understanding how to minimise environmental weeds and how to make use of them.
Fresh from the garden
Nathan Hoeksema has worked at many top restaurants in Australia and England and was head chef at Stefano’s in Mildura and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen in Melbourne. Now father of three, Nathan is passionate about creating healthy and delicious foods for the whole family. Nathan will help you create a number of dishes using anything green from your school garden including common weeds.
Gluten free is not a side dish
With so many children unable to eat gluten and other common ingredients it is time to embrace allergy sensitive cooking. Work with Renae Redgen from The Shak in Buderim to create a lunch that will reflect our changed perception of what makes a meal.
Event management
If we ask schools what is the greatest challenge in running the Kitchen Garden Program the answer is often ‘how do we finance our valuable program into the future?’ Join us for a mind expanding workshop to identify and develop ideas on how schools can work together to create an event and raise funds. Event management experts will work with you as a cluster of schools to plan a 2015 Kitchen Garden food event.
