Kids in the garden and kitchen

Friday, July 29, 2016

The cooler winter days are a good excuse to spend a day cooking with children and – if you rug up! – it’s also a great time to get out in the garden.

On sunny days head out into the garden to harvest some of your winter vegetables or prepare the beds for spring planting, and on wet or cold days retreat into the kitchen to cook up something hearty.

We recently asked our newsletter subscribers to tell us what their children enjoyed growing in the garden and cooking up in the kitchen. We were sent in lots of joyous photos and thought we’d share our five favourites.

We hope they inspire you to spend a day in the garden or kitchen with your children!

“These photos are of my daughter Chaviva in fig ecstasy. She helps water the tree in our garden all summer and then as February draws closer watches for birds in the tree ... then it's time to pick and pig out!” (Amanda Tenne, North Caulfield, Victoria)

“Our kids love growing corn. We only moved into our new house last May so a first crop of corn was picked early and enjoyed by both boys. We are excitedly growing potato and pumpkins now.” (Kylie Ramachenderan, McKail, Western Australia)

“My son loves gardening and cooking. He grows a lot in our little garden. He picks salad for us and grows chook greens for his girl ‘Roger’, who provides him with breakfast in return.” (Wendy, Adelaide, South Australia)

“Lola, 8, loves to cook! She has recently been doing a passion project on Julia Child and has enjoyed reading books about her and watching her TV shows. She wants to start testing out some of her recipes next!” (Amanda Lonsdale, Urraween, Queensland)

“Our two-year-old granddaughter, Rachael, enjoyed planting her first herb garden – with parsley, basil, mint and rosemary for her mummy to use in cooking.  Lots of fun for all involved.” (Anne Copperwaite, Currumbin Waters, Queensland)

These five newsletter subscribers were the winners of the competition in our July newsletter, and received a kids’ cooking and gardening pack for their efforts.
