National Bird Week 19-25 October

Wednesday, October 14, 2015

Looking for a fun activity to do with children in your school, kindergarten, childcare centre, preschool or home garden next week?

Then why not take part in the Aussie Backyard Bird Count during National Bird Week, from 19-25 October.

Last year’s bird count involved more than 28,000 people from across Australia, who helped count more than 800,000 birds.

This year BirdLife Australia hopes one million birds will be counted in seven days.

The bird count is open to everyone, as all you need is 20 minutes, your favourite outdoor space, and some keen eyesight or binoculars.

Just download the Aussie Bird Count App and register your bird watching site – then you can record the birds you see, and look up those you don’t know.

The bird count could be a great numeracy activity for students at Kitchen Garden Program Schools, as well as Kitchen Garden Classroom schools and early learning centres.

The app allows you to see live statistics and information on who is taking part in the bird count near you, the number of birds and species counted across your neighbourhood and the whole of Australia.

To join the count visit aussiebirdcount.org.au or download the Aussie Bird Count app from Google Play or the App Store.

The website also includes tips on how to create a bird-friendly garden.
