Science curriculum: the alchemy of activators

What makes bread rise? How does waste turn into compost? Discover why and how this happens as we unpack the biological science behind substances that change their physical shape in the kitchen and garden.

Details

This online workshop is suitable for all kitchen and garden educators who would like to strengthen connections between key kitchen and garden tasks and science learning outcomes.

During this one-hour online workshop, we will:

  • demonstrate the alchemy behind focaccia dough and compost, and how to make these with children
  • investigate the living organisms that transform flour into bread and garden waste into compost
  • explore the breadth of science resources available on the Shared Table
  • hear from a teacher about how to maximize the learning potential of these two activities across literacy, numeracy and general capabilities learning outcomes

Meet the presenters

Kate and Belinda oversee Professional Development at the Foundation. They have cooked and gardened with children for many years, and share a passion for hands-on learning that links to curriculum.

They will be joined by Briony Tulk, a primary school teacher and kitchen garden coordinator at Brindabella Christian College in Canberra, who brings a wealth of experience linking her kitchen garden program with explicit learning outcomes.
