They’re great with the kids, you get fresh eggs and if you think an aquarium is relaxing, just wait till you’ve watched a hen scratch around for a while! Fleur Baker from BookAChook will introduce you to the world of chooks and how to set them up in your school garden. There will also be time for Q&A.

Details

This workshop will be led by Fleur from BookAChook, specialists in bantams in the backyard.

BookAChooks hire out chickens to people who are interested in keeping chickens but want a test run first, to see whether it works for them. The people from BookAChook are therefore well-versed in the urban home or school garden environment as a site for keeping chooks. Discuss pens, breeds, nutrition, managing a healthy environment, how to care for chooks, and how to enjoy having them in your garden.

Fleur grew up on a farm, but even since she moved to the city has always kept chooks in her backyard. After 20 years in community health and as a yoga teacher Fleur has returned to her roots, helping people bring a little bit of the country into their city gardens – it's good for your health too!

Additional Details

Please wear comfortable clothing for kitchen and garden workshops and closed shoes. Bring a hat/wet weather gear/sunscreen as appropriate, a camera, notebook and pen.
