Garden Specialists – please choose one workshop from Session 2 and one workshop from Session 3.

Have you ever wondered about the best way to grow bananas in your school garden? Award-winning organic gardener Barry Batchelor will show you how to generate the right micro-climate by creating a 'banana circle' – a simple but very effective process. Information on DPI growing permits and where to source plants will also be available.

Details

Barry Batchelor is an award-winning organic gardener, permaculture designer, senior technologist with Black is Green (producer of Biochar production equipment) and the owner of Australia’s first company producing and supplying Biochar for backyard gardeners, horticulture and agricultural businesses (Black Earth Products). Barry is a creative, skilled organic gardener who now produces much of his own produce, including bananas from his half-acre permaculture-inspired food forest that sits within his much larger garden, The Kurwongbah Overflow.

Barry will show you how to build a 'banana circle', creating an appropriate micro-climate for growing banana plants. Banana plants provide great learning opportunities for students, the leaves can be used in the kitchen for platters, steaming and garnishes, and obviously the fruit is a huge boon.
