Wicking beds are efficient growing systems that help to keep your plants happy and flourishing by retaining moisture in your garden and drastically reducing the amount of watering needed. The wicking system is similar to a self-watering container, a reservoir of water is stored underneath the plants and the water moves upwards into the soil for the plant roots.
In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to use readily available materials to convert existing garden beds to wicking beds and also create one from scratch.
Details
In this class Seila will discuss the theory of wick gardening and participants will renovate a raised garden bed into a wicking bed garden using readily available materials. Wicking garden beds are suitable under large trees, in clay or sandy soils and are a great inclusion as a part of a low maintenance garden. In fact vegetables have been observed to grow faster and larger in wick gardens compared to normal soil gardens!
Seila is the enthusiastic and generous Garden Specialist at Aspendale Gardens Primary School and a practising permaculturalist. He has run a variety of hugely popular classes for the Foundation's Kitchen Garden School training days and our public garden classes.

Please wear covered shoes suitable for working in the garden, and bring appropriate outdoor gear such as garden gloves, hats or coats. If weather is inclement the workshop will move indoors.
Enter the College via the main reception area, which is located near the end of Cromwell Street, and follow the signs to the kitchen where we will meet before heading out to the garden.
Public transport is often a good way to get to Collingwood College, with Collingwood train station only minutes away. However, on Saturdays there is usually parking available in the immediate vicinity of the College. Other parking options are generally the north and south sides of Hoddle Street, in Gipps Street and in the parking zone at the end of Islington Street.
Please note, the Foundation endeavours to proceed with each Public Workshop as planned, however in the instance of very low numbers of registrants or other unfortunate events we reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours before scheduled. In all cases we will do our utmost to inform registrants a week in advance of any cancellation, and a 100% refund will be made
