Details
The morning will focus on your choice of either a Kitchen or Garden session.
In the garden, join a representative from Gray Community Garden who will explore how organic principles can be used to boost productivity in the garden. Observe another school’s garden plan, layout and setup to gain inspiration and comparisons for your own school or centre, and exchange ideas with other gardeners on the day. Each garden session will include a skills-based component focused on building kitchen garden knowledge and expertise. Bring along your top tips, plus any excess plants or seeds to share.
In the kitchen, travel to Asia for the day with Emma Lupin, former Kitchen Specialist at Alawa Primary School. Emma has an incredible depth of experience and knowledge, and will be bringing local produce to add to the menu. We will be celebrating China’s Cantonese and Sichuanese cuisines, along with dishes influenced by ingredients and methods from Vietnam, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia: silky dumpling wrappers, spicy and salty fermented bean pastes, chilli-pickled mustards stems, the sharp tang of la lot (wild betel leaves), the warmth of coconut rice and the sweet fragrance of ginger, pandan leaves and lemongrass all combine to create a sensory feast. Share techniques for folding wonton wrappers, slicing, dicing, steaming and wok-frying, as well as stories of your own school’s culinary journeys, with other like-minded specialists.
In the afternoon, we'll learn more about effective teaching in the kitchen and garden, and take a problem-solving approach to issues such as fundraising and budgeting. There will also be a session on accessing The Shared Table, our online community.
To close the day, you'll enjoy a hands-on activity and discussion on the program’s learning opportunities and making links to the curriculum.
If you are new to your kitchen garden program or have just become a Kitchen Garden Classroom member, consider attending the introductory Delivering Kitchen Garden Classes workshop in Darwin on Wednesday, 17 May 2017.
