Add variety to your veggie patch and your plate with some under-used Asian crops that are easy – and interesting – to grow and harvest.

This workshop, led by passionate and generous host Seila Hierk, will focus on vegetables not usually found in your average nursery, such as luffa, sugar cane, choko, long gourd, hair gourd, snake bean, yam, sweet potato, water chestnuts, water spinach, Chinese broccoli, amaranth, holy basil and more. Seila will explain the different growing requirements of a variety of tropical Asian vegetables that anyone can grow in most Victorian gardens, so you can grow almost any vegetable you can find at your local Asian grocer.

Details

Seila Hierk is an experienced and enthusiastic permaculturist and Garden Specialist at Aspendale Gardens Primary and Weeden Heights Primary School.

From the 2012 workshop:

‘The whole workshop was interesting from beginning to end. Seila was a world of information but not in an overwhelming way. He was clear and consistent. There were so many interesting things to learn because it is such an untapped topic. Seila taught about Yams, edible Cannas, semi aquatic edible plants, simple ways to propagate and more! He introduced so many new varieties to the group that you could see everyone soaking up the information like sponges. It was really a fascinating subject.’

Seedlings will be available as well as take-home handouts.

Additional Details

Please wear covered shoes suitable for walking in the garden, and bring appropriate outdoor clothing such as hats or coats. If weather is inclement the workshop will move indoors.

Enter the College via the main reception area, which is located near the end of Cromwell Street, and follow the signs to the garden.

Public transport is often a good way to get to Collingwood College, with Collingwood train station only minutes away. However, on Saturdays there is usually parking available in the immediate vicinity of the College. Other parking options are generally the north and south sides of Hoddle Street, in Gipps Street and in the parking zone at the end of Islington Street.

Please note, the Foundation endeavours to proceed with each Public Workshop as planned, however in the instance of very low numbers of registrants or other unfortunate events we reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours before scheduled. In all cases we will do our utmost to inform registrants a week in advance of any cancellation, and a 100% refund will be made
