
This one-day professional development workshop is designed for educators with previous experience delivering a kitchen garden program. The training provides educators with an opportunity to consider the successes and challenges of their program, to engage in skills sharing and to networking with peers from other schools and centres.
Educators are given options to extend key skills in the kitchen and/or the garden.
Details
In the garden:
Observe an established school garden layout and set-up to gain inspiration for your own school or centre. Engage in skills-based activities focused on building kitchen garden knowledge and expertise. Bring along tips and any excess plants or seeds to share.
In the kitchen:
Travel to Southeast Asia for the day and explore dishes mapo tofu, steamed chicken wontons, spring onion pancakes and stir-fried Chinese greens. Investigate techniques for slicing, dicing, steaming, wok-frying and dumpling production, and share stories of your own culinary journeys with other like-minded educators.
Training objectives:
- Engage with professional networks to enhance the delivery of your kitchen garden program.
- Consider the successes and challenges of your kitchen garden program.
- Extend on the skills, activities and experiences provided in your kitchen and/or garden.
- Share and develop teaching resources and session ideas with a professional network.
- Further your understanding of pleasurable food education.
- Develop strategies for strengthening the key elements of your program.
What to bring?
- Bring digital or hard copy photos, planning materials and case study examples to share.
- Wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes for kitchen and garden workshops.
- Bring a hat/wet weather gear/sunscreen as appropriate, a camera, notebook and pen.
- Bring seeds, plants and anything else you have to share.

Training outcomesEarly Childhood Educators:
This course is intended to support the implementation of the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) National Quality Standards.
Completing the Networking and Skills workshop reinforces the following standards:
- Standard 1.2 – Educators and coordinators are focused, active and reflective in designing and delivering the program for each child.
- Standard 2.1 – Each child’s health is promoted.
- Standard 3.3 – The service plays an active role in caring for it’s environment and contributes to a sustainable future.
- Standard 6.3 – The service collaborates with other organisations and service providers to enhance children’s learning and wellbeing.
Completing the Networking and Skills workshop will contribute evidence toward 5.0 hours of accredited professional development in maintaining the following standards:
