Join Meriam chef, Nornie Bero as she shares her love of Australian native ingredients and demonstrates how to incorporate indigenous ingredients and flavours into your kitchen classes and experiences. 

This session will introduce you to different native ingredients you can use in your kitchen garden program, including information about each ingredient, a little about where they come from, how to use and source them.

This online workshop is suitable for kitchen garden educators and teachers from early childhood, primary and secondary schools. 

Details

Nornie Bero is head chef and business owner of Mabu Mabu and Big Esso. Originally from Mer Island in the Torres Strait, Nornie has been a professional chef for over 20 years. Her style of cooking is all about generosity and flavour. She has been creating dishes using native ingredients for much of her career and is currently on a mission to make Indigenous herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits part of everyone's kitchen pantry.  

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation acknowledges the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who have been gathering, growing, harvesting and using Indigenous ingredients for over 60,000 years on the lands now known as Australia.

Additional Details

The outcomes of this course are aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

Completing Cooking with Native Ingredients will contribute evidence towards 1.0 hours of accredited professional development in maintaining the following standards:

1.3: Design and implement teaching strategies that are responsive to the strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.

1.4: Design and implement effective teaching strategies that are responsive to the local community and cultural setting. Linguistic background and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders.

2.4 Provide students with the opportunity develop understanding and respect of aboriginal and Torres Strait islander histories, cultures and languages.

This online workshop will take place using Zoom. A link will be sent to all registered participants before the event. You can join the workshop using a computer, tablet or mobile phone. 

A recording of the workshop will be sent to participants after the session.
