Why spend money on plastic or metal trellis frames that don't last when you can make them yourself from organic and readily available garden materials? In this popular class you will learn how to make natural willow structures for your garden including a trellis and a fan that can be used for growing peas and other twining and climbing plants.

Details

Many vegetable crops need structural support in the garden and it’s easy to provide this once you know how. Seila will teach you the tricks to creating sturdy, beautiful and functional garden pieces including selecting the right materials, weaving techniques and tips to ensure the longevity of your creations.

Alternative wood material for the weaving will be discussed, such as fruit tree punning. Seila will teach you how to select the best wood, how to harvest it and treat it to ensure the longevity of your structures.

Seila is the enthusiastic and generous Garden Specialist at Aspendale Gardens Primary School and a practising permaculturalist. He has run a variety of hugely popular classes for the Foundation's Kitchen Garden School training days and our public garden classes.

Additional Details

Please bring appropriate outdoor gear such as garden gloves, hats or coats. If weather is inclement the workshop will move indoors.

Enter the College via the main reception area, which is located near the end of Cromwell Street, and follow the signs to the kitchen where we will meet before heading to the garden.

Public transport is often a good way to get to Collingwood College, with Collingwood train station only minutes away. However, on Saturdays there is usually parking available in the immediate vicinity of the College. Other parking options are generally the north and south sides of Hoddle Street, in Gipps Street and in the parking zone at the end of Islington Street.

Please note, the Foundation endeavours to proceed with each Public Workshop as planned, however in the instance of very low numbers of registrants or other unfortunate events we reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours before scheduled. In all cases we will do our utmost to inform registrants a week in advance of any cancellation, and a 100% refund will be made
