Garden Specialists – please choose one workshop from Session 2 and one workshop from Session 3.

Wicking beds are the perfect way to ensure your plants have all the water they need to flourish, and really come into their own in the hot summer months when high rates of evaporation and transpiration can seriously affect plant growth rates and yields.

Details

Wicking is a technique of creating self-watering beds that water from below rather than above, and is incredibly valuable in minimising water use and maintaing school gardens over holiday periods. Learn how to make small wicking beds using recycled materials, and scale the concept up to a size that suits your school.

As well as being the Project Officer in South Australia for the Kitchen Garden Foundation, Ben Taylor is an avid home-gardener with a thriving veggie patch and a mini-orchard shoe-horned into his suburban front yard. Qualifications in permaculture, horticulture, conservation and sustainability means he brings substantial technical knowledge to the team. Previously Ben has delivered Sustainability Education in schools (with a focus on sustainable agriculture and organic food production), lectured in Horticulture at Roseworthy Agricultural College and was instrumental in starting the first Community Garden in the Adelaide CBD.
